Top 5 Reasons Why Men Should Invest in Their Mental Health

According to recent data, suicide is the seventh leading cause of death for men. The suicide rate for men is four times higher than for women. These numbers emphasize the situation's urgency and the critical importance of raising awareness and providing support. In this blog post, we will share five reasons men should invest in their mental health and wellness as part of their personal and professional development.

In February 2023, I presented at the Fresno County Suicide Prevention & Intervention Collaborative. The gathering brought together passionate professionals who shared a deep concern for the rising suicide rates within Fresno County. The room was filled with mixed emotions - shared responsibility, care, worry, and a resolute determination to make a difference. This experience highlighted the pressing need to address men's mental health during Suicide Awareness Month, as the statistics reveal a troubling reality.

  1. Therapy provides men with a safe, private, and confidential place.

The only limits to your privacy and confidentiality have to do with safety concerns. Your safety and well-being and the safety and well-being of others within your spheres of influence are always a priority.  An essential part of being masculine is knowing when to invite others into your life to protect you from yourself while also supporting you in ensuring the safety of others.

2. Therapy improves your performance, productivity at work, and career trajectory.

Excelling and advancing in your professional life is essential on your journey to becoming the best version of yourself in life. You can tremendously impact people's lives while earning a great income. There is no limit to what you can accomplish. Therapy can help you reach success and achievement you cannot achieve alone.

3. Therapy helps establish healthy boundaries.

Unhealthy boundaries can cost you your life and livelihood. Healthy boundaries can empower you and help you thrive while feeling calm and secure about law, ethics, and interpersonal relationships.

4. Therapy enhances transparent and honest communication.

Judicious self-disclosure and vulnerability surrounding negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills are essential to show up for your life as your authentic self.

5. Therapy allows you to practice self-awareness and become more emotionally intelligent.

As a human being, you can experience a broad spectrum of emotions to feel, identify, and express—self-awareness and emotional intelligence are vital to your success. Therapy can uncover underlying emotions behind anger, leading to transformative self-discovery.

By exploring these five reasons, we aim to encourage men to prioritize their mental health and well-being. Investing in oneself is not only an act of self-care but also a step toward creating a healthier and happier life. Together, let's break the stigma surrounding men's mental health and work towards a society that supports and uplifts every individual on their journey towards better mental well-being.
