Leadership Is the Lifelong Pursuit of Becoming an Integrated Person
Jamal’s parents
Nearly two years ago, I sat in the front row as my parents renewed their wedding vows to celebrate fifty years of marriage. As I recently looked back through those photos, I saw much more than a celebration. I saw a lifetime of faith, intentionality, grace, and perseverance. It reminded me that some of life's greatest leadership lessons are lived long before they're ever taught.
When I looked at those photos, I wasn't thinking about fifty years of perfection.
I was thinking about fifty years of intentional choices.
Choosing one another.
Extending grace.
Growing through disappointment.
Offering forgiveness.
Following Jesus together.
That's what endurance looks like.
That kiss wasn't powerful because it represented a perfect marriage. It was powerful because it reflected two ordinary people who have spent decades aligning what they believe with the way they live.
My parents would be the first to tell you they've made mistakes. They've experienced disappointment and regret. Yet I believe they would both point to the same foundation that sustained them:
Jesus Christ.
While I first learned this lesson by watching my parents' marriage, I've come to realize it reaches far beyond marriage itself. Whether you're single, married, divorced, widowed, or walking through a season you never expected, the invitation is the same: to become a person whose life increasingly reflects what you believe.
Growing up, my parents didn't just tell us about faith—they modeled it. Looking back, I realize they were shaping my understanding of leadership long before I ever knew what leadership truly was.
Today, as a husband, father, therapist, and leadership consultant, I've come to believe something that continues to shape my own life:
Leadership is the lifelong pursuit of becoming an integrated person.
Whether you're leading a family, a business, a team, or simply learning to steward this season of life well, leadership begins with the person you're becoming.
We all know what it feels like to live divided. We want to live faithfully, yet we still become distracted, fearful, reactive, or overwhelmed.
But there is another possibility.
The integrated life.
A life where our faith, relationships, character, leadership, and daily decisions increasingly reflect what we truly believe.
That's why one of the greatest gifts my parents gave me was encouraging me to read a chapter from Proverbs each day. Over the years, I've learned that Proverbs wasn't written merely to give us more information—it was written to shape us into wiser people.
This week's proverb has stayed with me for years:
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
— Proverbs 4:23
Everything flows from the heart.
Our marriages.
Our singleness.
Our parenting.
Our friendships.
Our leadership.
Our influence.
Everything.
That's why I don't believe leadership begins with learning how to lead other people.
I believe it begins with learning to lead ourselves.
This Week's Leadership Challenge
Ask yourself one simple question:
Where is God inviting me to become more integrated?
Maybe it's your marriage.
Maybe it's your singleness.
Maybe it's your faith.
Maybe it's your leadership.
Maybe it's your work.
Choose one area.
Take one intentional step toward greater alignment this week.
Because becoming the person God created us to be rarely happens all at once. It happens through faithful, everyday decisions.
